How to Stay Healthy During Flu Season
Illnesses like the flu (influenza) and colds are caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. The flu and colds usually spread from person-to-person when respiratory droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person are propelled through the air and are deposited on the mouth or nose of people nearby.
The influenza virus may also be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets on a surface or object and then touches his/her mouth or nose before washing his/her hands. Studies have shown that the influenza virus can survive on environmental surfaces and can infect a person for 2 to 8 hours after being deposited on the surface.
How to Help Stop the Spread of Germs
Take care to:
Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. If a tissue isn't handy, cough into your sleeve.
Clean your hands often with warm soap and water. If not available, use alcohol-based hand wipes or gel sanitizers.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Stay home when you are sick and check with a health care provider when needed.
Practice other good health habits, including eating well, getting proper sleep and exercise.
